I'm not sure that this qualifies as anything as grand as a 'study', but never mind.

I've recently been trying to gather information relating to the (apparently) recent colonisation of mid-Deeside by Tree Sparrows.  By mid-Deeside I mean between Banchory and Ballater, including areas around Tarland, Lumphanan, Tornaveen and Torphins as well as Feughside, Glendye and Ballogie. There were a small number of records from the Aboyne area during the 1981-84 NE atlas, but there does appear to have been a real westward spread into the area more recently.

So far the records I have date back about 5 years, with the first records from Strachan and Tornaveen, and the most recent relating to birds being seen at Aboyne, Finzean and Ordie (Dinnet) this last winter.  In many of these areas, birds are now breeding or showing signs of breeding.

If anyone has any records I would be interested to hear about them.  Location, date of first appearance, date of first breeding and any info on numbers is all I'm really looking for.

I'm not sure this qualifies as anything very useful in the way of a reply, but there was at least 1 near Craigievar at Hillhead of Kintocher farm (NJ579085) when I was doing an Atlas TTV on Saturday (21st).

Thanks for that.  Kintocher is right on the watershed (possibly just into Donside).  I suspect that some of the birds that have appeared in the Tarland & Aboyne area will have come via Craigievar from the Alford area where there are plenty of tree sparrows, whereas those around Banchory and Strachan may have spread up the Dee.

Hi Paul,

I live not far from Kintocher and we have breeding tree sparrows, but they only appeared up here about 4-5 years ago. We have been in the area 18 years now. Since we began feeding all the year round the bird numbers have rapidly risen. So has our bird food bill!!!

Regards.

Hi Paul,

There were at least 2, probably more, west of Lumphanan around the houses at Old School (NJ570038) yesterday.

Cheers,
Hugh.

Thanks for that.

The Tree Sparrows in my garden in Finzean appeared for the first time in March but then disappeared until 1 November, since when up to two have been present along with 10+ House Sparrows every day.  I've put three nest boxes up so fingers crossed they will stay this summer.

There were at least three Tree Sparrows this morning at Coull, in a mixed flock of tits and Chaffinches. On the Tarland - Coull road, at NJ 512034, where there is a newish house with feeders in the garden.  First I've seen in the area.

Hi Paul
You are probably aware already, but the Tree Sparrows are still there at The Millers, Midmar.  For the price of a coffee you can watch them at the feeders outside the restaurant.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for that.  If you've seen them recently, could you submit an atlas roving record?  There are no winter tree sparrow records for NJ60 yet and it will save me the cost of a cup of coffee (and a slice of their excellent caramel shortbread!).

I was at Millers just before Christmas and probably saw a tree sparrow on the feeders, but didn't think too much about it as I thought I had already submitted a roving record from a previous visit.  It wasn't until last week that I checked the species list for NJ60 and found that it was a breeding season roving record that I'd submitted previously.  By then I couldn't remember for sure if I had actually seen a tree sparrow during my pre-Christmas visit or if I'd just imagined it!

Hi Paul

saw them this afternoon over a late lunch.  I've sent a roving record.
